Understanding Gangs: Crime, Influence, and Community Impact

This course is a 6  week course,  delivered in the home to students who are unable to attend on site provision. 

This course can be accredited by the NCFE at Level 1 or Level 2

Week 1: Introduction to Gangs

  • Topics Covered:

    • Defining gangs: characteristics and types (e.g., street gangs, organized crime).

    • Historical context and evolution of gang culture.

Week 2: The Psychology of Gang Involvement

  • Topics Covered:

    • Factors influencing gang membership: social, economic, and psychological.

    • Understanding the motivations for joining gangs (e.g., belonging, identity, protection).

Week 3: Crime and Gang Activity

  • Topics Covered:

    • Types of criminal activities associated with gangs (e.g., drug trafficking, violence, extortion).

    • The relationship between gangs and the broader criminal justice system.

Week 4: The Influence of Gangs on Communities

  • Topics Covered:

    • Examining the impact of gangs on community safety, cohesion, and youth.

    • The role of socio-economic factors in gang proliferation.

Week 5: Prevention and Intervention Strategies

  • Topics Covered:

    • Overview of effective prevention and intervention programmes (e.g., outreach, education, mentorship).

    • The role of law enforcement, community organizations, and families in addressing gang issues.

Week 6: Moving Forward: Building Resilient Communities

  • Topics Covered:

    • Strategies for fostering resilience and preventing gang involvement among youth.

    • The importance of community engagement and support networks.

By the end of this course, participants will have a comprehensive understanding of the complexities surrounding gangs and crime, empowering them to contribute positively to their communities and support prevention efforts.
